Description
FICUS VIRENS - CURTAIN FIG TREE, 10 SEEDS
Ficus virens is a plant of the genus Ficus found in India, Southeast Asia, through Malaysia and Northern Australia. It is commonly known as the white fig, locally as pilkhan and in the Gun-djeihmi language it is called “di-borndi”. Like many figs, its fruit is edible. One of the most famous specimens of this tree is the Courtain Fig Tree on the Atherton Tableland, near Cairns. It is a popular tourist attraction.
The Ficus virens var. sublanceolata grows in the subtropical rainforest of north-eastern New South Wales, and south-eastern Queensland in Australia.
It is a medium sized tree that grows to a height of 24-27m in New Delhi and up to 32m in height in more humid areas. This fig belongs to the group of trees known as strangler figs as its seeds can germinate on other trees and grow to strangle and eventually kill the host tree.
This species has become popular as a tree often used in the avenues of the city of New Delhi and the city of Noida.
It has two distinct growth periods in its Indian environment: in spring (February to early May) and during the monsoon rains (i.e. June to early September). The new leaves are a beautiful shade of pink, reddish.
This is a very large tree; the size of the crown can sometimes exceed the height of the tree. The oldest and largest pilkhan specimens in Delhi can be seen inside the Humayun's Tomb complex.
The leaves are known in Thai cuisine as Phak lueat and are eaten boiled as a vegetable in Northern Thai curries.
GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Fill a container with the peat mixture.
Sow the seeds on the surface of the mixture. Do not cover, the seeds need light to germinate. Always keep the soil moist.
Place the container outdoors in full sun or partial shade if temperatures are above 24/25 degrees. If temperatures are too low, keep the container indoors under artificial lights.
Keep the soil moist, do not let it dry out. Germination occurs between 15 and 90 days.
Transplant the seedlings into individual pots when the leaves are well developed.
