Description
Description
It includes about 400 annual or perennial herbaceous species and also subshrubs, 10 to 20 cm tall, with spring blooms, in various colors and corollas with a characteristic shape; generally with the beginning of the hot season the plants stop flowering, stimulating the production of seeds and concluding the vegetative cycle.
Reproduction
Viola species reproduce both sexually (with recombination of characters) and vegetatively (without recombination). The larger flowers borne at the top are pollinated by insects, while the smaller flowers, located at the bottom, never open (cleistogamy) and carry out self-pollination. The seeds, which in this case have a genetic makeup similar to that of the plant that originates them, fall and germinate near the mother plant. In addition, stolons may be present, modifications of stems that carry out vegetative multiplication and give rise to new plants genetically identical to the mother plant.
Cultivation
They like shady positions, soft, rich, medium-textured, fresh soil, but they adapt to any type of soil. The perennial species can flower all winter in mild climates, while in colder climates they should be protected under glass. It is considered an invasive species in lawns[2].
They are multiplied by sowing at the end of summer to have flowering from the end of the following winter, or by dividing the tufts at the end of flowering.
Uses
Violets are used:
as ornamental plants in gardens for flower beds, borders, or for pot cultivation on terraces. Species with large-flowered cultivars such as Viola cornuta are grown industrially for cut flower production.
in the confectionery industry to produce fresh flowers crystallized in sugar. Bonbons à la violette are a specialty of the city of Toulouse in France.
in perfumery to extract its essence.
