Description
Family: Musaceae.
Origin: Asia.
Characteristics: Moderately sized banana, found in Burma, Northern Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. It used to be associated with Musa balbisiana and Musa acuminata but its scientific name is Musa itinerans, similar to the guangdongensis variety but not the same, it also grows considerably larger and new plants (suckers) develop 3 meters from the mother plant. The ripe fruits are blue and/or purple in color, are quite small in size and are used in Thai cuisine.
Soil: The soil must be loose and well drained, rich in humus and with three parts of peat and one of potting soil. Exposure must be in sun or partial shade. Watering must be regular, but be careful of stagnation that could cause the roots to rot. Be careful of winter frosts.
Sowing: Musa itinerans seeds germinate easily if placed in water for 24/30 hours. At the beginning of spring the seed should be placed in a well-loosened soil, mixed with peat and sand. Germination should occur within 6-9 weeks.
