Description
MUSA VELUTINA - RED BANANA, 10 SEEDS
Family: Musaceae.
Origin: Asia.
Characteristics: Musa velutina is a perennial plant native to Asia and is the only species of Banana that flowers and bears fruit even when grown indoors. Musa velutina has a thick, erect stem of yellow-green or pinkish-green color and can quickly reach a height of 2 meters. It has oval, waxy and thick leaves, with pink veins on the underside. In spring, at the top of the short stems it produces a rosette inflorescence made up of long bracts of an intense pink-fuchsia color, at the base of which small yellow or orange flowers bloom. In summer, at the base of the bracts, the fruits ripen, small bananas with three ribs, of a purple-pink color, covered with a very light down that makes them velvety to the touch. The fruits of Musa velutina are edible and have a slightly acidic flavor and floury pulp. Excellent as an ornamental plant and as a Bonsai
Soil: The soil must be loose and well drained, rich in humus and with three parts of peat and one of potting soil. Exposure must be in sun or partial shade. Watering must be regular, but be careful of stagnation that could cause the roots to rot. Be careful of winter frosts.
Sowing: Musa velutina seeds germinate easily if placed in water for 24/30 hours. At the beginning of spring the seed should be placed in a well-loosened soil, mixed with peat and sand. Germination should occur within 6-9 weeks
