Description
The genus includes, with a few exceptions, epiphytic species, with sympodial growth, equipped with oval or spherical pseudobulbs, with one, sometimes two or three, leaves at their apex.
As in all Orchidaceae, the flowers are trimerous, zygomorphic, with one of the petals modified into a labellum, whose appearance serves as an attraction for pollinating insects. Characteristically, the inflorescence develops at the base of the pseudobulb, a characteristic that allows differentiation from the otherwise very similar genus Dendrobium, in which the inflorescences develop on the sides or on the top of the pseudobulb. The column, the organ in which both the male part (pollinium) and the female part (stigma) are enclosed, has a geniculate foot to which the labellum is attached. The result of this conformation is a notable motility of the labellum itself, which vibrates at every breath of wind, attracting pollinating insects.[2]
Distribution and habitat
The genus Bulbophyllum has a pantropical distribution: the centre of maximum biodiversity is the mountain forests of Papua New Guinea (more than 600 species) but the genus is also present in Australia, South-East Asia (more than 200 species in Borneo), India, Madagascar (188 species, some endemic), Africa, Central America and the tropical belt of South America.
