Description
The cherry tree is a flowering and fruit tree belonging to the Rosaceae family. It can grow in cool climates and can withstand even the harsh winter temperatures without any problems. It fears water stagnation and has the particularity that it does not require constant irrigation.
The leaves are slightly oval in shape, emerald green in color and from their prickly tip will grow red glands. The petioles are generally 5cm long and from them will grow 2 to 5 red glands. The cherry fruits are immediately recognizable by their intense red color, pulpy consistency and sweet or acidic flavors, depending on the variety grown.
The Ancient Romans already knew this plant very well, thanks to their conquests. They managed to import the seeds both from Britain and from the areas of Asia Minor. Its original name is “Prunus avium” which means “Bird plum tree”. To avoid confusion with plums, cherries were called “Cerasae”.
How to grow cherry trees
The cherry tree is a tree in all respects and as such - to be grown - it needs space, soil and light. It prefers mild climates in dry and not very rainy areas and their flowering occurs around April, thus avoiding the feared return of frost. The seeds are found inside the stone present in each fruit. Their germination lasts almost a year, but there are methods that allow you to shorten the time: the stone is very hard to penetrate and the water takes a long time to reach the seed placed inside it.
It will be enough to use a nutcracker to break the shell, thus allowing the water to come into contact with the actual embryo; by doing so, germination will last only a few months. For those who need a faster germination, it will be enough to break the nut, extracting the seed inside, so the water will reach it immediately. The use of this technique will allow a germination of only 30/40 days.
The soil used for germination, as for the rest of the cycle, must be of medium texture, well fertilized and well drained: stagnant water is the most aggressive enemy of the cherry tree. Just take a pot of at least 1.5L and fill it with soil: after making a hole in the center one centimeter deep, just insert the seed and cover it with more substrate.
The soil must not be pressed and it will be sufficient to always keep it moist to ensure successful germination; a spray bottle is the best tool to ensure not only homogeneity in irrigation but also the administration of the correct quantity; it is recommended to give 5 sprays 3 times a day.
Once the shoot has emerged, we should only worry about keeping the soil moist but never filling it with water: many growers base the misting on the weight of the pot.
When the plant has put out the first set of leaves, the plant will begin the vegetative phase; at this point it will stop growing in height but will expand its root system and therefore it will have to be repotted in a pot of at least 6.5L. As soon as the repotting is done, it will be enough to spray the clod of earth without adding fertilizers, but using only water without correcting the pH of the water.
Planting outdoors does not require any special care, it will be enough to fertilize with well-matured manure at the beginning of the vegetative recovery; if you do not have this product then you can administer the fertilization thanks to a long-release fertilizer rich in nitrogen.
