Description
FICUS AURICULATA, 10 SEEDS
Ficus auriculata is a plant of the Moraceae family that grows throughout southern Asia.
The term "auriculata", meaning ear-shaped, derives from the shape of the very large, heart-shaped leaves; it is in fact called "the fig with elephant ear leaves".
The young leaves produced by the apical buds of the branches are red in color, they become progressively green with growth, the back of the leaves is bright green, smooth, while the ventral part, lighter, is tuberculated. The leaves are slightly toothed (unusual in the genus).
The species is functionally dioecious (there are plants with functionally only male flowering, and female plants that produce edible fruits); it presents the phenomenon of caulicarpy, that is, the fruits gathered in dense clusters are produced directly from the trunk or the largest branches, and not at the top of the branches. The female plant produces large edible figs of medium quality, with red pulp.
The plant is poorly resistant to fire; it loves sunny sites.
The species is widespread in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Indochina and southern China. In Nepal the leaves are used as fodder for livestock.
GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Fill a container with the peat mixture.
Sow the seeds on the surface of the mixture. Do not cover, the seeds need light to germinate. Always keep the soil moist.
Place the container outdoors in full sun or partial shade if temperatures are above 24/25 degrees. If temperatures are too low, keep the container indoors under artificial lights.
Keep the soil moist, do not let it dry out. Germination occurs between 15 and 90 days.
Transplant the seedlings into individual pots when the leaves are well developed.
