Description
The daisy is a perennial plant found in meadows, on roads and in uncultivated lands throughout Europe. Its flowers appear as solitary flower heads with petals welded together and enclosed by green bracts. The receptacle, that is, the swelling at the top of the peduncle on which the different floral parts are found, is conical in shape and composed of yellow tubular flowers and surrounded by white ligules on the upper part and pinkish-white on the lower part. They are not scented.
The main characteristic of daisy flower heads is that they close during days without sun or rain, while during the day, in the presence of sun, they follow its movements. The flowers of daisies are very frequented by butterflies and bees. They can also resist temperatures many degrees below zero.
Daisy flowers, in addition to being very beautiful, have some properties and can be used for various purposes. Fresh flowers, just picked, can be a good help for the treatment of boils, but they also have an antispasmodic power. In the kitchen, the flower heads can be used to prepare an excellent tea, especially suitable for underweight and weak children. The flower heads can also enrich a simple mixed salad. The flowers and chopped fresh leaves are useful for soothing pain resulting from bruises or sprains.
