COMMON NAME: Chamomile
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Matricaria chamomilla L. Synonym: Chamomilla recutita L.
FAMILY: Asteraceae
WHERE IS IT?
HABITAT: Chamomile is a rather widespread herbaceous plant. Present throughout Europe and in some areas of Asia. In Italy it grows in the plains and hills, not above 1500 meters above sea level. It can be found in fields, in gardens but also along the roads.
TIME AND METHOD OF HARVESTING OR CULTIVATION: the flower heads are collected in the evening after a dry day, by hand or using special combs. The balsamic time of Chamomile is marked by the position of the ligulate flowers (white petals), when their position is parallel to the stem and they show the tubular flowers well, it is then that Chamomile has the maximum content of active ingredients and is ready to be harvested. Subsequently, the flowers must be dried in a ventilated, dry place to prevent the formation of mold.
