Violets include about 400 species, mostly annual or perennial herbaceous plants, of small size (10-20 cm) and characterized by a prolific and lively spring flowering. In addition to their ornamental use, violets are used in the confectionery industry for the production of fresh crystallized flowers, such as the famous bonbons à la violette of Toulouse, and in perfumery for the extraction of their delicate essence.

Propagation is easy by sowing in late summer for early flowering or by dividing the tufts after flowering. Perennial species can produce winter blooms in mild climates, while in colder climates they need protection.
