Description
Violets include about 400 species, mostly annual or perennial herbaceous plants, of small size (10-20 cm) and characterized by a prolific and lively spring flowering. The flowers, with distinct shapes and in a wide range of colors, are the distinctive feature of these plants. With the arrival of heat, flowering generally ceases, leaving room for the production of seeds and the completion of the life cycle.
Adaptability and multiplication:
Violets are versatile plants, capable of adapting to different types of soil, preferring however soft, rich and fresh soils in shaded positions. Their reproduction occurs both sexually, through entomophilous pollination of the most showy flowers and self-pollination (cleistogamy) in hidden flowers, and vegetatively through stolons that generate new plants identical to the mother.
Uses and cultivation:
Prized for their beauty and ease of cultivation, violets are widely used as ornamental plants in flowerbeds, borders and pots, bringing color and vivacity to gardens and terraces. Some species, such as Viola cornuta with its large-flowered cultivars, are grown industrially for the production of cut flowers .
In addition to their ornamental use, violets are used in the confectionery industry for the production of fresh crystallized flowers, such as the famous bonbons à la violette of Toulouse, and in perfumery for the extraction of their delicate essence.
Propagation is easy by sowing in late summer for early flowering or by dividing the tufts after flowering. Perennial species can produce winter blooms in mild climates, while in colder climates they need protection.

- Wide variety of colors and floral shapes.
- Compact size, ideal for various locations.
- Ease of cultivation and adaptability to the terrain.
- Multiple ornamental, food and perfumery uses.
