Description
Carnation (Dianthus L.) is a genus of the Caryophyllaceae family, native to temperate zones of the globe.
The scientific name derives from the ancient Greek "dianthos" and means "flower of God" (Zeus).
Cultivation
Carnations require sunny exposure, soil rich in organic substances and minerals, compact, calcareous and dry.
They multiply by sowing, by cutting and by dividing the tufts.
Annual species are sown in spring or in boxes in February, with flowering after 6 months.
Perennials grown industrially as annuals, in addition to sowing, are multiplied by cuttings in the winter period, protecting them with mats from frost, flowering begins in September-October until the following spring, in some regions such as Tuscany flowering is summer; while in areas with freezing winters the varieties with large flowers and rigid stems are grown in pots in greenhouses; it is always necessary to foresee the use of support systems for the weak stems, with the appropriate plastic nets, to prevent them from breaking easily.
