Cultivation
The Agostana White Onion from Chioggia is an extremely easy vegetable to grow, thriving in well-drained, loose soil rich in organic matter, with full sun exposure for at least 6-8 hours a day. Sowing can be done by scattering or in rows 20-30 cm apart, at a depth of about 1-2 cm. The ideal sowing period varies from March to May, depending on the climate zone. Once the seedlings emerge, it is advisable to thin them out, leaving a distance of about 10-15 cm between each one to allow the bulbs to develop optimally and reach their optimal size. Be sure to keep the soil constantly moist, especially in the early stages of growth and during bulb development, while avoiding waterlogging which could cause rot. Harvest generally occurs when the leaves begin to yellow and curl towards the ground, usually between July and August. After harvesting, it's essential to let the bulbs dry in the sun for a few days to promote healing of the crown and prolong their shelf life. Then, store them in a cool, dry, and ventilated place. With proper care, you'll enjoy a bountiful, long-lasting harvest that will enrich your table for months.
