Characteristics
Traditional Italian Variety: Authentic Borrettana Onion, prized for its unique aromatic profile and culinary history.
Distinctive Shape and Size: Characteristically flat and small in size, ideal for even cooking and whole use in numerous recipes.
Sweet and Delicate Flavor: Not very pungent, its sweetness is enhanced in caramelized, baked, sweet and sour preparations, and for the creation of pickles and jams.
Ease of Growing: An excellent choice for those looking for a guaranteed-success vegetable, even suitable for those new to gardening.
High Germination: Carefully selected seeds to ensure a high germination success rate.
Non-GMO: Grow with the peace of mind of knowing you're planting natural, non-GM seeds for a wholesome harvest.
Cultivation
The Borrettana onion thrives in well-drained, loose soil rich in organic matter, in a full sun location. It's recommended to prepare the soil with compost or organic fertilizer before planting.
Sowing: Sowing can be done directly in the ground in spring (March-April), once the risk of frost has passed, or in a seedbed in late winter (February). Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep, keeping a distance of 10-15 cm between plants and 25-30 cm between rows.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging, which can promote rot. Watering is especially important during the initial growth and bulb formation periods.
Care: Thin the seedlings if necessary, leaving enough space for proper bulb development. Remove weeds regularly to avoid competition for nutrients and water.
Harvest: Borrettane onions are ready for harvest when the foliage begins to yellow and wilt, usually between July and September. Carefully remove the bulbs from the soil and let them dry in the sun for a few days, in a ventilated area, before storing.
Storage: Once well dried, they can be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place for several months, ensuring supplies for the winter.
