Cultivation
The Savonese Red Onion prefers full sun and well-drained, loose soil rich in organic matter. Avoid waterlogging, which can damage the bulbs' development.
Sowing: You can sow directly into the ground between March and May, in furrows about 25-30 cm apart, at a depth of 1-2 cm. For an early harvest, you can start sowing in seedbeds as early as February.
Thinning: When the seedlings have reached about 10 cm in height, thin them out, leaving a distance of 10-15 cm between each plant to allow the bulbs to develop as best as possible.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not excessively so, especially during the growth and bulb formation stages. Reduce watering as harvest approaches.
Harvest: Onions will be ready to harvest between July and September, when the leaves turn yellow and curl. Let the bulbs dry in the sun for a few days before storing them in a cool, dry, and ventilated place for long-term storage.
