Characteristics
Shape and Color: Elongated, cylindrical bulbs with a splendid bright red-purple skin and white flesh tinged with pink.
Unparalleled Flavor: An extraordinary sweetness and an almost total absence of that spicy aftertaste typical of other onions, making it ideal for eating raw.
Gourmet Variety: Appreciated by chefs and gourmets for its versatility and its unique, delicate flavor.
Easy to Grow: Suitable even for less experienced gardeners, it guarantees excellent success and good resistance.
High Germination: Our seeds are selected to ensure a high germination success rate.
Non-GMO: Our seeds are certified Non-GMO, for natural and healthy cultivation in full respect of nature.
Cultivation
The Long Red Tropea Onion prefers a mild climate and a sunny location to thrive. Follow these simple steps for a bountiful and tasty harvest:
Sowing: Direct sowing in open ground is recommended between March and April (for summer harvest) or in August-September (for spring harvest). Place the seeds about 1-2 cm deep, keeping a distance of 10-15 cm between plants and 30-40 cm between rows.
Soil: Prefers loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Good drainage is essential to avoid waterlogging, which can compromise the bulb's growth.
Exposure: Requires full sun for at least 6-8 hours a day to fully develop its flavor and color.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods and while the bulbs are swelling, but avoid overwatering, which could cause rot. Reduce watering as the bulbs mature.
Care: Weed regularly to eliminate weeds that may compete with young plants for nutrients and water.
Harvest: The bulbs are ready to harvest when the leaves begin to yellow and dry, usually between July and September for spring plantings. Let the onions dry in the sun for a few days before storing them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place for long-term storage.
Cultivate the magic of Calabria in your garden with the Long Red Tropea Onion: a touch of sweetness and color that will revolutionize your kitchen!
