Cultivation
The Round Red Tropea Onion is easy to grow and adapts well to a variety of soil types, as long as they are well-drained, fertile, and rich in organic matter. It prefers full sun exposure for optimal bulb development.
Sowing:
Seedbed: From February to April, to obtain robust seedlings to transplant later.
Direct: From March to May, directly into the garden. Place the seeds in rows about 25-30 cm apart, then thin the seedlings to 10-15 cm apart when they reach a few centimeters in height.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the early stages of growth and during bulb formation. Avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering as the bulbs mature to promote shelf life.
Care: Weed regularly to eliminate weeds that compete for nutrients and water. Prepare the soil with well-rotted compost or organic fertilizer before planting.
Harvest: Generally from July to September, when the leaves turn yellow and begin to curl. Let the bulbs dry in the sun for a few days after harvesting before storing them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
With just a few simple steps, you can enjoy your fresh and delicious Round Red Tropea Onion, bringing the authentic Italian flavor directly to your table, perfect for enriching any dish with a hint of sweetness!
