Technical details:
Botanical Name: Mammillaria spinosissima (also known as Red Ball Cactus or Spiny Cactus)
Seed quantity: 10 seeds selected to ensure the best quality and high germination.
Plant type and cultivation cycle: Perennial and succulent cactus, characterised by slow but constant growth which ensures a long life and a constantly compact appearance.
Plant Height: When mature, it typically reaches a height of 15-30 cm and a diameter of 10-15 cm, making it perfect for growing in pots.
Uses: Excellent as an indoor ornamental plant, ideal for windowsills, desks, or bookcases. Also perfect for rock gardens (in suitable climates), succulent collections, and open terrariums.
Organoleptic characteristics: It has a short, globose or cylindrical stem, densely covered with thorns of varying colors (red, white, yellow), creating a striking visual effect. Its most distinctive feature is the "crown" of small but vivid, pinkish-purple or magenta flowers that develop around the apex in spring/summer, followed by red fruits resembling small berries.
Hardiness and Origin: Native to central Mexico, this species is extremely drought-resistant and tolerates short periods of cold if kept dry. It prefers mild temperatures.
Sowing period: The ideal period for sowing is spring (March-May) or late summer (August-September), to take advantage of the optimal temperatures for germination.
Optimal germination conditions: Requires a constant temperature between 20°C and 28°C and high humidity (sowing indoors or under film is recommended). Requires bright, indirect light.
Soil type: A specific, extremely well-draining substrate for cacti and succulents is essential. An ideal mix includes universal potting soil (20%), coarse sand (40%), and aggregates (pumice, lapilli, perlite) (40%). It prefers a neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Recommended location: Prefers full sun or bright partial shade. Ample direct light is crucial to stimulate flowering and intensify the color of the thorns.
Germination time: Germination can range from 7 days to 4 weeks, and in some cases even longer. Patience is a virtue when growing cactus seeds.
Pot or ground cultivation: Given its compact size and need for controlled drainage, it is primarily grown in pots. Open ground cultivation is only suitable in areas with very mild winters and extremely well-drained soil.
Quality Specifications: Our houseplant seeds are Non-GMO (not genetically modified), carefully selected for their freshness and to ensure high germination, offering you the best foundation for your cultivation.
