Technical details:
Botanical name: Pachypodium horombense
Seed Quantity: 10 seeds per pack
Plant type: Perennial, caudiciform succulent. Slow but long-lasting growth cycle, it develops a thickened stem (caudex) for water storage.
Plant height: It can reach 30-60 cm in height with a mature and well-developed caudex, under optimal growing conditions.
Uses: Ideal as an ornamental collectible, a single specimen for bright interiors, or as a distinctive feature in rock gardens in hot, arid climates.
Organoleptic aspects: Characterised by a globose or fusiform caudex of grey-green colour, deciduous lanceolate leaves and a spring-summer flowering with bell-shaped flowers of a bright and intense yellow.
Hardiness and Origin: Native to Madagascar, it is extremely drought-resistant. It cannot tolerate temperatures below 5°C and must be protected from frost.
Sowing time: Sowing is ideal in spring or early summer, when temperatures are consistently warm and stable.
Optimal conditions for germination: Requires constant temperatures between 25-30°C, high environmental humidity (covered with a dome or transparent film) and a substrate that is always slightly moist but well aerated.
Soil type: Requires a highly draining substrate, specifically for cacti and succulents, composed of inert materials such as pumice, lapilli, perlite, and coarse sand, with a small amount of organic soil. The ideal pH is neutral or slightly acidic.
Recommended exposure: Prefers full sun. In the early stages of growth, bright but indirect light is recommended to avoid sunburn.
Germination time: Germination can take 1 to 6 weeks, or sometimes longer. Patience is key.
Pot or ground cultivation: Pot cultivation is recommended in most climates to control the environment and protect the plant from the cold. Open ground cultivation is recommended only in tropical or subtropical areas with no risk of frost.
