Technical details:
Botanical name: Parodia ottonis (syn. Notocactus ottonis)
Seed Quantity: 10 seeds per pack
Plant Type and Cultivation Cycle: Perennial succulent cactus. Slow-growing and long-lived, it can produce blooms for many years.
Plant height: It generally reaches a diameter of 5-15 cm and a similar height, maintaining a globular or slightly cylindrical shape.
Uses: Ideal as an indoor ornamental plant, to enhance terrariums or rock gardens in suitable climates. An excellent addition to succulent and exotic collections.
Organoleptic characteristics: The cactus's body features well-defined ribs and short spines, usually numerous and varying in color. Its flowering is its strong point: large, bright yellow, orange, or deep red flowers bloom from the apex in spring and summer, creating a wonderful contrast with the cactus's green body.
Hardiness and Origin: Native to the subtropical regions of South America (Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina), this species is highly drought-tolerant. It requires protection from low temperatures and frost.
Sowing period: Sowing is recommended in spring (from March to May) or at the beginning of summer, when temperatures are more stable.
Optimal conditions for germination: Requires a constant temperature of 20-25°C. A humid environment (achieved by covering the pot with cling film) and indirect but bright light are essential.
Soil type: Prefers a specific, extremely well-draining substrate for cacti and succulents. A mixture of all-purpose potting soil with coarse sand, perlite, pumice, or volcanic lapilli is ideal. The optimal pH is neutral or slightly acidic.
Recommended location: Requires full sun for abundant flowering, or bright partial shade in climates with very intense summer sun. Protect from direct sunburn during the hottest hours of the day.
Germination times: Germination can vary, generally occurring within 1-4 weeks, but some seeds may take longer.
Pot or ground cultivation: Easy pot cultivation is the most common solution in Italy, allowing the plant to be moved to sheltered areas during the winter. Growing in the ground is only possible in areas with extremely mild and dry winters.
Quality Specifications: Our cactus seeds are Non-GMO (not genetically modified), come from a Variety Selected for its ornamental characteristics and boast a high germination rate.
