Technical details:
Botanical name: Tetragonia tetragonioides (syn. Tetragonia expansa) – commonly known as New Zealand spinach or summer spinach.
Seed quantity: 10 seeds per pack, guaranteed for freshness and vitality.
Plant Type and Cultivation Cycle: Annual plant, with a long harvest cycle that extends throughout summer and early autumn. It has a leafy habit, developing a groundcover or semi-erect growth habit.
Plant height: It tends to spread horizontally for 60-90 cm, reaching a height of about 30-60 cm.
Uses: The young leaves and tender shoots are excellent both raw in salads and cooked, like spinach. Excellent in stir-fries, soups, or as a side dish.
Tasting Notes: The leaves are triangular, dark green, thick, and slightly succulent. The flavor is delicate, slightly salty, less bitter than traditional spinach, and maintains a good consistency even after cooking.
Hardiness and Origin: Extremely resistant to heat, drought, and even less than ideal soil conditions. Native to the coasts of Australia and New Zealand.
Sowing time: Directly into the ground from April to July, after the last risk of frost. In a seedbed, you can start 3-4 weeks earlier.
Harvest Period: Begins about 50-70 days after sowing and continues abundantly throughout the warm season, harvesting the outer leaves to encourage new growth.
Optimal conditions for germination: Requires a soil temperature between 18°C and 25°C. To improve germination, it is recommended to soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing.
Soil type: It prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter, but is also tolerant of poor or slightly saline soils. An ideal pH is between 6.0 and 7.0.
Recommended exposure: Full sun for optimal growth, but in very hot climates it can benefit from light partial shade during the hottest hours of the afternoon.
Germination times: Seeds generally germinate in 10-21 days, but timing may vary depending on environmental conditions.
Pot or open ground cultivation: Thanks to its expansive yet controllable growth habit, it is suitable for both open ground cultivation, where it can cover large surfaces, and in large pots or planters on balconies and terraces.
Quality Specifications: Our seeds are Non-GMO (not genetically modified), come from a variety selected to ensure vigor and high productivity, and offer high germination, making them ideal for those looking for organic garden seeds and healthy, natural growing.
