Description
The pepper or hot round chili pepper is one of the many existing chili peppers. Originally from Calabria, it is grown and appreciated throughout Italy. This chili pepper, moderately hot and very pleasant to the palate, is perfect for use in the kitchen, for stuffing and for eating fresh. To appreciate it at its best, we recommend growing it at home. Here are our tips for growing hot round chili peppers: simple and definitely satisfying!
Round hot pepper: cultivation and transplanting
These beautiful chillies, like other varieties of Solanaceae, prefer a warm climate and love the sun: therefore, place them in a very bright and well-exposed area of the vegetable garden or on the balcony.
If during the winter the temperatures in your area are particularly rigid, that is, below 8°, you will have to shelter your round chillies indoors or in a greenhouse.
Remember to transplant a maximum of three or four seedlings per square meter (leave, on the flat ground, a distance of at least forty centimeters between the plants): they will thus have enough space to grow well. However, they have a limited development.
Transplant the round hot pepper into light, not too dry soil: water, if necessary, before transplanting.
If you grow it in a pot, remember that this capsicum pepper is an annual plant. This means that it lives well for a long time (but still limited periods), as long as it is in a pot of at least forty centimeters in diameter. Place expanded clay on the bottom, so that it is well drained.
Cultivation care
Fertilize the soil with good organic compost, rich in nutrients but low in nitrogen.
Water regularly, so that the soil is never too dry, but be careful of water stagnation, dangerous for the cultivation of round chili peppers, as well as other species. A little secret to make them spicier? Gradually reduce the water intake.
When your seedlings are over thirty-five centimetres tall, secure them to a stake so that they can grow well, and prune any branches that make the silhouettes excessively “untidy”.
Harvesting and using hot round chili pepper
The fruits of the round hot chili pepper are medium-small and sweet: you will notice that they are ripe when they have a bright red color.
Their harvest will take place from mid-June to late October, depending on the regions and climate zones. Be careful, when you harvest them, to leave a part of the stalk.
This very productive variety will give you ideal fruits to stuff, to preserve dried or in oil, stuffed with tuna or anchovies, or to eat fresh in mixed appetizers.
Their fiery aroma will bring joy and some of the best flavors of the Mediterranean tradition to the table. Not only that: these particular spicy peppers are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties (thanks to the capsaicin content), help the body burn fat and aid digestion
